Empowering Education: UGC's Initiative on Short-Term Skill Courses in Higher Education

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently endorsed guidelines for the integration of short-term skill development courses in higher education, aligning with the objectives of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The focus is on seamlessly integrating skill development across all levels of higher education by introducing industry-relevant certificate courses within Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs). These courses emphasize practical training, providing hands-on experience.

Eligibility for these courses is open to individuals who have completed the 10+2/senior secondary exam or its equivalent. HEIs will offer credit-linked short-term skill development certificate courses lasting 3-6 months, with a course structure ranging from 12 to 30 credits, strategically designed to prioritize practical learning.

UGC highlights a maximum student intake of 60 for each cohort in a short-term skill development course, with a minimum faculty-student ratio of 1:30. HEIs have the flexibility to offer courses in various areas, including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics, Data Science, and more.

Furthermore, the guidelines encourage HEIs to develop plans facilitating employment opportunities and internships for students completing these courses. Collaboration with Sector Skill Councils/Awarding Bodies and industries is encouraged to enhance credibility, access placement opportunities, funding schemes, and training, ensuring the content remains up-to-date and cutting-edge. The comprehensive initiative aims to bridge skill gaps and empower individuals with practical skills for the evolving job market.
